Pyramids and the history of Sudan

The Nile valley holds important traces of the Kingdom of Kush. UNESCO’s Archaeological Sites of the Island of Meroe include pyramids, temples and the remains of a royal city. Gebel Barkal and the Sites of the Napatan Region offer another starting point for learning about Sudan’s ancient heritage.

Our original article and photographs of Sudan’s pyramids record one traveler’s visit in 2009. For more background, browse our archived overview of Sudan alongside the UNESCO descriptions.
